Freelance copywriter in Southampton: how I work and who I work with

I’ve been earning my pennies as a freelance copywriter in Southampton for 4 years, working with clients in the city, around the city, and thousands of miles from the city.
Born in Aberdeen and raised in the New Forest, I moved here right in the middle of the pandemic-who-shall-not-be-named. When I’m not sharing the office with my partner (it works, somehow) I’m hopping around independent cafés and local coworking spaces. It’s a nice life.

Who I work with
I work with purpose-driven brands and charities. There are enough greedy businesses out there owned by greedy people that are doing just fine. I want to help grow the ones that are doing good for the world. For people and planet.
Alongside this, I also work with solopreneurs struggling to write about themselves and organisations in regulated industries (legal, financial) with big comms goals but small resources to achieve them. I’ve worked with some awesome local businesses, including The Mayflower and written for a handful of local magazines on behalf of clients.
But you don’t have to be local to work with me. I’ve got clients in Spain, Germany, Belgium, Italy, and even the US. If you need words and we’re a good fit, we can (and should) work together.
The kinds of projects I take on
I specialise in website copy, TOV guides, and messaging.
I’m the right copywriter for you if
You’ve launched your business but are struggling to communicate what you do
You’ve got a website that isn’t converting leads
You want to nail the foundations of your brand to help the team produce copy and content that’s aligned and consistent.
Examples include website copy for Future Water Association, TOV guide for sustainable cleaning brand Seep, and a brand book for a sustainability coach.
I also work on an ongoing basis for companies that need more frequent support. It might be SEO blog writing, articles, case studies, email sequences, or LinkedIn posts. Retainers are a fab way to make sure you’ve got my help scheduled in every single month, without worrying about whether or not I might be booked up.
How I actually work
If you’ve never worked with a copywriter before, it might feel a bit intimidating to contact one. Am I locked in the second I say hello? Will they try to sell more services to me? How much input do they need from me? How will they know how I want to sound? Do they even understand my business? These are all questions I’m asked frequently and frantically.
So here’s my process:
1. You reach out, ideally telling me a bit about what you’re after, and we book in a free discovery call.
2. I put together a bespoke proposal based on everything you’ve told me (and it’ll be a lot, because I’ll have asked you MANY questions). Once you agree, I send over my terms and my initial invoice (usually 50% of the total to be paid upfront) and we’re off.
3. We schedule a briefing call. This is when I ask you very specific questions about this project. We’ll cover your brand, your audiences, your competitors, your TOV, and anything else I need to do a good job. If you’re wondering how I understand enough about your business to write about it, this is it. Plus research. A lot of research. I'll look at your competitors, read your reviews, stalk your social media, watch your episode of Dragons Den. Whatever it takes.
4. I squirrel away and send you the first draft. Depending on the size of the project, turnaround could be anywhere from 1 to 3 working weeks. You take a look through, note down any amendments you’d like me to make, and send it back. I’ll make the changes, then I’ll deliver the final version.
5. Once we’re signed off, I’ll send you my final invoice for the remaining 50%. Job done. Thank you, come again.

Do we have to be in Southampton to work with you?
Nope! As I’ve said, I work with clients all over the world. It’s 2026, and working remotely is easy as pie. That being said, if you are local, it’s always nice to meet over coffee first. I can’t turn down a trip to an independent coffee shop.
It’s also useful if you need someone who understands the local area, for example. I wrote for Nested Southampton on the local property market – pretty easy to do when you live in it, rented in it, and bought in it.
I also partner up with other brilliant freelancers in Southampton. So if you’re looking for a designer-copywriter duo, or a marketer-copywriter duo, I’ll have someone who can help.
So if you’re based in Southampton or Hampshire and want to talk through a project, feel free to reach out. Be it in a coffee shop, coworking space, or with a walk in the New Forest. You’ll be surprised how easy it is to pry me away from my desk.
FAQs
What information do you need from me to get started?
Whatever you have on hand. If you’ve got brand and TOV guidelines, send them over. If you don’t, don’t worry – that’s what the briefing call is for.
Do you work with businesses outside your specialisms?
Yeah, sometimes! I love to support brands and people I feel aligned with. So if I feel we’re a good match and we like each other’s vibe, I’m all in. But if you do super yucky things for the world, count me out.
How much does a project typically cost?
Don't hate me, but this is hard to say. As you might imagine, a 12-page website is much less work than a 3-page one. Websites start at £750, and TOV guides and brand books vary. More on this soon, though.
